Over the past decade, brothers Ajay and Atul Gogavale have been very consistent in Marathi films. Following the success of Sairat in 2016, they have been getting a fair share of Hindi movies, including its remake Dhadak and Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero.
Now, Ajay-Atul compile for the Hrithik Roshan starrer Super 30, which is based on the life of educationist and mathematician Anand Kumar. The musical duo has always been strong in using regional flavours, and this time they use dialects from Bihar effectively, besides a retro flavour. Lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya provides lines that match the situations and moods.
The opener ‘Jugrafiya’ (a play on the word ‘geography’) is a 1990s-styled duet featuring Udit Narayan and Shreya Ghoshal, both in good form. Lines like “Tujhse jo milke jo mazaa hai, kahaan woh ganit ke khayalon mein hain?” and “Tere khayalon ne badla mera dil ka jugrafiya” attract the masses.
‘Paisa’ begins with a Bappi Lahiri-styled orchestration and is sung in a rock mode by Vishal Dadlani. A real surprise comes on the group song ‘Basanti No Dance’, a take on the famous Sholay lines. Ridiculous yet hilarious, the lyrics go, “Basanti no dance, in front of these dogs”, and the focus is only on dholak, tabla and whistles. It’s got a very catchy feel and if promoted well, the makings of a hit.
‘Question Mark’, sung by Hrithik himself, is like the theme song, and has interesting lines like “Sikhane waalon ko sikha denge, padhenge aise ki padha denge.” The problem is that it gets a bit loud.
The soundtrack concludes with ‘Niyam Ho’, a motivational song featuring a large number of singers. With just the right arrangements and harmonies, it creates an impact.
Overall, this is a fairly decent attempt by Ajay-Atul, and will play a crucial role in their Hindi film career. They have films with Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan and Ranbir Kapoor lined up, and the expectations are high.
